Chapter 20 - Piedmont Wine Tasting- Langhe Area

A Slower Paced Morning

With our first winery visit cancelled due to rainstorms, we slept in a bit and had a later breakfast. This gave some time to capture memories of our room. This is the bedroom:

We don't usually take pictures of hotel bathrooms, but this one was unusually nice and had a photogenic feature - that oval window.
And here's what you see from it, all the way to the Alps- kinda cool, eh?
This day gave us the best clear view of them.

Morning Wineries

This map will give you an idea of the wines of the Langhe area, the area southeast and soutwest of Alba.

Our first winery of the day was Cascina Vano. On the way, we took a quick peak into Alba.

The Rivetti family started their farm in the late 1800's at Cascina Vano, and went totally focused on wine making in the 1970's. The winery sits in the hills near beautiful villas like this one.
The winery was charming and we had some great Barbaresco and Nebbiola.

Most fun of all, was meeting the family, Dad and kids! They were so welcoming and wouldn't less us pay for the wine we picked out to buy.

Our other winery before lunch was Cascina Principe. It is in the little village of Neive with a beautiful fortress, a relatively small family-owned winery with quite a variety of wines produced, with around 30 acres of vines. It's the Vacca family who owns and run this place, since 1894. This is their logo.

We had a great time talking with the very knowledgeable son.

A Fantastic Lunch

We had possibly the most spectacular looking meal of our trip this day in the town of Barbaresco at Antinè, truly nouvelle Italian. It was very modern with unique flavors and very architectural small presentations, like these initial amuse Bouches:
Even the breads were exciting - not exactly common in Italy.
From the menu, we had red shrimp in a light sauce as a starter.
We followed with ravioli with garlic cream inside and squid
The main was pigeon with blueberries and onion sauce. The pigeon and shrimp were truly unusual wonderful combinations.
We had a wonderful chocolate dessert and espresso.
And then...were inundated with an array of surprise "after dessert" treats—chocolate truffles, pistachio nougat, caramel glass, and a chocolate Bon Bon with lychee.
While the meal was very good, it was also very precious and incredible. We waddled back to the car...

Afternoon Wineries

Mauro Bussi and his family have a beautiful selection of wines, made on 15 acres of land, not so far from the town of Barbaresco. They had very nice wines and it was all a very personal sharing of their wares - quite a few as you can see here!

The last tasting of the day was a dream experience - Dogliani il Generale. The Dogliani family runs this small winery, now in the 5th generation and here they are.
After a wonderful barrel tasting of young wines...
We went into the family home...
and began the tasting there.
The wines were beautiful.  We liked their style very much.  We tried to buy two bottles of wine.  At the end he gave us the bottles and then also gave us the open bottle of Nebbiolo that we had tasted—truly an amazing experience.

Dinner

After the oh-so-fanciful lunch, we were glad to walk down the street, around the corner to the very casual and local Vin Bar for dinner. It is both a wine store and a restaurant.

It was a truly fun experience. Here is how the bread arrived.

And this was a bottle of wine on display next to our table.
The dinner was dead seriously good...we had veal tonnato
and pasta with black truffles --simple but very good.
For our last night in Piedmont wine country, we were treated to a beautiful sunset.
But we still had one more day of wine tasting ahead....
